huge amounts of 'Not read:' receipts arrivein my inbox

Using Outlook XP 2002 with message tracking options set to notify me of
emails i've sent that are read.

Yesturday had several hundred emails with the

subject: "Not read: Subject"
& body of the email "your message
to: fist lastname subject: ........
sent: 01/04/2005

was deleted without being read on 09/05/2007.

All these notification in a lot of cases are several years old and wonder
after all this time a whole load arrive all at once yesturday?

Much appreciate responses

It sounds like an issue outside the scope of Outlook unless they were
residing on the server and Outlook downloaded them all at once. Check the
headers to see what has happened.

I got that kind of email (from my boss) every now and then but not in the
hundreds. It's more like 10-20 of them and yes, some of them are over a year
old. It turns out that my boss never reads his email (I've seen his
mailbox - thousands of unread mail sits there). He cleans his mailbox when
it hits the limit. That's when I receive "Not read:" email from him :) Not
sure if your problem is the same though.

Thank kind of ties in and makes sense, but what i dont understand is why its
hundred of these emails come in in the space of 5minutes.
Thanks for bringing this up help explain the problem somewhat.

100's come in a short period because that is when the recipient deleted
them.

I hate to have to revisit such an old topic, but I have a user in my building that is having this happen. She will recieve hundreds of "not read" receipts in a large block and then none. Then a few days later, hundreds more. Any ideas? We are running exchange 2003 with Outlook 2003. Thanks.

Has the Exchange server been restarted?
Is there a user deleting large blocks of emails? A mailbox being deleted?

Still, you might want to add some more info of your own into this thread or
even start a new thread considering this thread is so old.
For instance, where are these "not read" receipts coming from?
From internal users? From unknown senders?
Which message(s) do they apply to?
Could her address have been abused for spamming?

It doesn't have to be your corporate system that has been used for this,
just the address and some external infected system could be responsible for
this as well.
