Huge document size when photos inserted

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

I recently wrote a report (around 300kb). I then inserted photos that had been resized (total size around 2.4mb). The file ended up 20mb!!!!! How can this be Were are all the mbs coming from?

I'm afraid nobody can even make an educated guess with no more details than
you've provided :)

What image formats?
How did you "resize" them? Print dimensions or pixel dimensions?
How did you get them into your document?
What file format did you save in?

What other specifics can you offer that may give some clue as to what you
might be dealing with?
