Huge PDF file from Word 2004

X

xandrar

When I made a PDF in Word X it was usually smaller than the original Word
file, now it is 10 times larger than the Word file. The Word file contains
pictures and Excel charts that I copied and pasted in from Excel.

The same thing happens whether I use Adobe PDF to print the file or click
Save as PDF in the print dialog box. So I don't think it is an Adobe Acrobat
problem.

Conceivably the Word file had the graphics linked while the PDF file
embedded them?

Thanks for responding. I think your assessment that the " Word file had the
graphics linked while the PDF file embedded them" is correct.

I tried all of the the numerous ways / paths to copy from Excel to Word --
only one of which offers a link option. Each one creates what appears to be
a picture in Word that can be edited -- so there is, according to a
tech-minded associate, a rasterized file and a meta file attached.

In Office X which had this same "ability" -- when you made a PDF from this
file -- Word sent only the object info so that the resulting PDF wouldn't be
huge. Somehow this is missing from what I am doing. Either I have overlooked
a setting or step, or Microsoft changed the way it ships the data to make
the PDF.

If you have any thoughts or suggestions I would be happy to learn of them.

These are the methods / steps I followed to copy the Excel charts and data
into the Word document that bloated as a PDF:

Shift Click > Copy Picture
Appearance as shown when printed
Size as shown when printed
Edit > Paste

This is interesting. Generally speaking, PDF is a space intensive format so
I'm not surprised to see that the files are big. I am surprised to hear that
PDFs generated from Word X would be smaller as I don't think we changes
anything that should affect that. A save as PDF job should be the same as a
print job. Have you tried opening the same exact file on X and 2004 and
comparing the PDF size? I would love to see your file if there is a
discrepancy in the size of the PDF produced.
