HUGE space between Header and text on Word 2007

I've completed writing a business letter that looks awkward because there is
too much space between the header and the text. The first line of text has
only the date on it. I tried moving it up by placing the cursor to the left
of the J in July. I can't move it up any more on the page.

Is my problem lie in the vertical length of my header? I tried setting my
margins for .25 inch on each side of the page, but to no avail.

What steps must I take to move the body of text higher on the page to be
closer to the header?

Thanks in advance.

Four things to check on:

1. Top margin: This has nothing to do with where the header is, which is
determined by the header margin.

2. Spacing After applied to the header paragraph (Format | Paragraph).

3. Spacing Before applied to the date paragraph.

4. Center justification instead of Top (Layout tab of Page Setup).

Thanks for your suggestions, Suzanne. Unfortunately, the problem wasn't
resolved even after I tried everything you advised. I'm able to move up the
header. I wonder if some other setting is
a. not allowing the date to be closer to the header or
b. making the header too many lines long even though there's no characters
in the unwanted lines.

Do you have any other ideas that I might try?

Although there may be no *visible* characters in the header, there could be
multiple paragraph marks, each of which will create a line of space. Click the ¶
button to turn on display of nonprinting characters. If you see more than one
paragraph mark, delete them.
