Hung over styles

B. Walker

I am using a specially created style for all Heading 1
text in my document. The style includes a border with
shading around the heading. I've inserted a page break
preceding this style, and the page break also picks up
the shading and the style. I've tried changing the style
of the page break to "Normal" and it also changes the
following heading to Normal. There seems to be no way to
separate them. Is there a solution to this? I'm using
Word 2002.

One way to deal with this problem is to make sure that the
page break is inserted in an empty paragraph, formatted
with, say, Normal style.

However, a better approach is to use paragraph formatting
to force a page break before a particular paragraph. It's
found in the Paragraph dialog box.

Instead of inserting a manual page break, format the heading paragraph (or,
better still, the heading style) as "Page break before" (Format | Paragraph
| Line and Page Breaks).

Great idea. I had forgotten that option was there!
