Hyperlink address is changing

J

Jaclyn

I am trying to create hyperlinks from a word document to existing files
located elsewhere on the network. For example, I enter the address as...

"\\Server\Red Documents\Document Blue.max"

After I click OK, the address becomes changed to...

"../Red%20Documents/Document%20Blue.max"

When I click on the link I get the following error.

"The address of the site is not valid. Check the address and try again."

How do I get the link address to stay as I have entered it?
Why does it change the back-slashes to forward-slashes and eliminate the
"server" part of the address?

Thank you,

Jaclyn

Hi Jaclyn,

What version of Word are you using?

Are you creating documents to be used locally, by others in a network or
email or web pages.

How Word creates links can vary based on version, the saved document
type/settings snd the location where you are saving the document. The two
dots ".." at the beginning of the hyperlink code is file system shorthand
that translates to
'from the location of the document named in the link (one dot = current
file folder level) go up one file folder level (two dots) to locate the
document

The %20 is the character string that browsers recognize as the equivalent of
a 'space' character on the web, but can cause issues within Word for
following its own links.

I am using Word 2003. This document and the linked files are for use in a
local network, not for use over and internet connection.

It seems like Word is turning the local address into a web address?
