Hyperlink Corruption with Word 2002 with an XP System

I am placing hyperlinks in a Word 2002 document. Each
time I save the document the hyperlinks are corrupted and
not readable.

What setting isn't correct? I'm at a loss.

Do you see something like: {HYPERLINK....}? If so press Alt + F9 to
toggle off the field codes.

Otherwise please describe what you mean by "corrupted and not
readable".
