Hyperlink feature no longer responds or works

In Word and Outlook, typical hypertext links for web sites and server UNC paths no longer underline or link. Furthermore, the hyperlink feature in Word no longer launches a window...no response upon selecting.

Links apparently work in Outlook "plain text" format but not HTML

I've researched and tried various solutions. Reinstall/repair Office 2000. Patch. Upgrade to Office XP and patch. Checked and rechecked file associations for URL: Hypertext Transfer Protocol. Registered various dlls (urlmon.dll, shdocvw.dll, shell32.dll, oleaut32.dll, actxprxy.dll, mshtml.dll). Checked registry keys for various html and hypertext settings in comparison with other XP systems.

I think you just have an option turned off.

In Word, go to Tools > AutoCorrect > AutoFormat As You Type, and make sure
there's a check next to "Internet and network paths with hyperlinks".

Jay, appreciate the input but that option has been enabled the whole time and still no hypertext features.

Are you using Ctrl+click?

Suzanne, tried that too

After many days of working on this, even running DCOM manager, windows file protection verification tool, remove/install IE6 SP1 and install Office 2003 I now have fixed it

Solution: Boot to WinXP CD, run Install and then R-Recovery on top of existing installation.

I'm glad to hear that you found a solution after all that work. It
sounds like you had a damaged DLL in the System32 folder, though I'm
surprised that the file protection verifier didn't find it.

This sort of thing has been much less common in the Win2k/WinXP
versions than in Win95/Win98. It's much more usual to find that the
cause of a problem is an option setting in some deeply buried
dialog...
