Hyperlink Opening Behaviour

Have an inventory db (2000 fileformat) with items associated to optional
hyperlinks. When opening a doc via this hyperlink, this opens in the
application assigned to it via Explorer Folder Options, but when opening an
image this always opens in Internet Explorer irrespective of the programme
association in Folder Options?

Can I control this behaviour. Secondly presumably I cannot (and maybe for
customer protection should not?) avoid MS generic warning messages about
opening hyperlinks?
