Hyperlink problems/relative links

I publish my site via FTP. To get my web links to work (to my own pages), I
have to manually type the whole url and file name to get them to work on the
uploaded page. . When I do this, the selected state feature no longer works.
When I view my site online and hover over a link, it only gives me the page
name, not the whole url, so users cannot access the page. I upload to my root
directory where my web host tells me and my index page comes up, but I have
to do as mentioned above for users to be able to access my pages.

If you are using the navbar wizard to create a navbar, Publisher will write
relative links to your other pages. When you tried to change that by writing
absolute links, that will break the "selected state feature". Also don't
forget that unless you changed it, the default output when you Publish to
the Web (assuming you are using Pub 2003) is an "index.htm" file, and a
subfolder called "index_files" which contain your other pages and
graphics...both of these need to be uploaded to your site. The navbar wizard
will create relative links to those pages.

You will probably need to recreate or repair your navbar, but it is hard for
me to say which without seeing what you did. Instead, go to Help in
Publisher and type in "navigation" and you will get instructions on
troubleshooting navbars, adding, removing, changing or reordering links on
your navbar, creating new navbars, etc. Read through those instructions, and
you should know how to fix your particular situation. If not, post back and
we can try to offer further advice. And don't forget to delete your old
Publisher HTML files and folder off your site, before you upload your new.

Thank you David for your quick response.
I understood what you were saying about the selected state feature being
broken, and I think that I know how to fix the nav bar back, but I am still
unclear as to how to get the links to work on my site if I keep the nav bar
intact with the relative links. When I have the relative links, and then I
publish and hover over a link it just gives the page name, not the whole url,
so that if you clicked on a link you get an error. I published my files to
the root directory where my host, Tripod, suggested and the index works, but
not the links from there, so that's why I went in and changed them manually.

Are you using the free hosting at Tripod that requires an ad on your site?
If so, your problems are probably caused by Tripod "framing" your site,
which is not supported by Publisher. You can contact your host and ask them
if they are framing your site, and is there is a workaround, or build your
own navbar with absolute links, or switch to a different hosting plan that
doesn't require framing. If you browse to your site with IE, then View >
Source you might spot some code referencing the framing.

Yes, I do have the free hosting at Tripod that requires ads. I contacted
them and and waiting to hear if there is a way to work around that if that is
the problem.
If they respond with something useful, I'll post it back here in case anyone
else is interested. But I'll probably end up sticking with the absolute
links, its no big deal, just a little more effort.
