Hyperlink text formatting - Suzanne?

Suzanne you've always had the *best* answers! This is the wrong forum but I
cannot find one that applies here.

Any way . . . somebody . . .

Word 2000, Insert >Cross-reference, with Insert as hyperlink turned ON:

Cross-ref to Figure numbers. Word makes a nice hyperlink but doesn't format
it in blue (or any color) or with an underline to indicate a hyperlink.

If I type in a web URL it DOES automatically format it as a link. So . . .
I created a text style, blue/underlined, and apply to every link
(manually!). But every time I make changes (add / subtract Figures that
change the Figure numbers) I have to refresh/update (F9) the hyperlinks, and
my hyperlink text style disappears and the link reverts to the paragraph
format. In other words the blue/underline text style disappears!

Is there some way to make Word format a hyperlink as a hyperlink? Preferably
blue/underlined?

Thanks.

Rod.

There is a Hyperlink character style (blue and underlined) that can be
applied, but I don't guarantee that updating the field won't remove it. Some
types of hyperlinks (such as cross-references) are evidently hard-coded not
to use that character style.

But I take it that there's no way to achieve the same automatic formating
that occurs on a URL or email address?

And hey I just remembered why I made my own hyperlink text style -- because
Word's will not apply it to a cross reference. Not in Word 2000 anyway.
Try it and see.

Look again. In Word 2002 at least, it does apply the style; it just
doesn't change the appearance to match!
