Hyperlink to another file location vs. attaching a document to a taskvia SharePoint

Some of my users are a bit hesitant to use project workspaces in order
to, say, tie a technical document to a task. They do not want to have
to peruse through multiple sharepoint sites to find a document.

What they want to do is store a hyperlink in the task record with a
pointer to a file location on the network.

They also want to possibly have one gigantic SharePoint site with
multiple folders in lieu of multiple SharePoint sites.

Is this even feasible and also what are the disadvantages or even
dangers???

Thanks,

Andy:

You can expose the "HREF" field in a task view and enter any valid UNC link
you want. You cannot link multiple documents to a single task using this
method as there is only one HREF field per task. Does this help address the
feasibility issue?

Yes, but they're not actionable in PWA. They display as text and not as a
link.

Thanks folks. In general isn't it better to create a sharepoint site
for a project and have links from you home pwa page to multiple sites
than one gigantic site with folders for each project? I'm thinking
that if you get MOSS installed and search working, there wouldnt' be a
problem finding a document uploaded to any one of the multiple
sites. Please comment on this if you would. These same users are
concerned about multiple project sites scattered all around.
