Hyperlink to document file not working

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

In MS Word 08, when I select text and go to Hyperlink and select a document on my computer to link to, it will link, and create underlined text, but the link doesn't work. When I click on the created hyperlink, I receive the error message, "Cannot open the specified file" When I hyperlink to a webpage, it works just fine. I had the same problem with MS Word 04. I'm following the directions exactly as explained in the help menu. Help!

Works fine here (2008 12.0.0, OS 10.4.11, PPC). I click on the link and
the doc opens.

The document is on your local drive, not a server or iDisk or anything?
Does it have a password? Is it a Word document? Anything different
about it? Can you open that document by double-clicking in the Finder?

Create a new dummy document with just a few sentences and save it on the
desktop. Does a hyperlink to that document work?

Exactly what is the title of the Help topic you are following, so that
we know what you are doing?

Strangely, when I created a new document and tried to create the link in the new document, it worked. And though I've had this problem repeatedly, I now cannot reproduce the problem in other documents. You can close this case, and if I have problems again I'll reopen it. Perhaps some of my documents were corrupt. I've been using MS Word for over a decade, so its possible.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I've continued to have trouble, but have found that if I open a new document, create the desire hyperlink in the new document, then copy and paste the hyperlink into the existing document where I want it, it'll work fine.

If I follow the exact same steps in the existing document, in won't work. So some kind of corruption in the older documents is preventing the hyperlink from working. Saving the existing document as another document doesn't solve the problem.

Make sure that the old document does NOT have a "Hyperlink Base" set in its
Web Properties. If it has, no hyperlinks will work unless the target files
are where the hyperlink base says they should be.'

Now: The exciting thing is that I cannot discover how to expose this
property in Mac Word.

It's one of the document properties in Win Word. Could that document have
ever been edited by an unskilled user in PC Word? If they've set an
hyperlink base, it's going to be a challenge to get rid of it.

Other than by the method you just discovered: create a new document and copy
the content in. The hyperlink base is a string property of the document's
default properties. If you "Save As" the default document properties are
copied forward to the new file.

If you simply paste the text of the old document into a new blank file, it
will not overwrite the existing properties of the new document.

Hope this helps

I'm seeing it in File | Properties, Summary pane.

Oh yeah... You mean that one right in front of my face labelled "Hyperlink
Base"? Why did they hide it there??? :)

I suspect we could help you if we knew what versions of software and
operating system you are using. Until then, "no" we can't.

You are much more likely to get a detailed answer if you can take the
trouble to type out a detailed question in proper English.

If you use txt spk lk u r, you probably won't get an answer at all. If you
can't be bothered to treat us nicely, we don't want to come to your party
:)
