Hyperlink to document

I have a database and would like to create a hyperlink for
an existing field. When I make a hyperlink an error
occurs stating, "the text is too long to be edited".
After trying different length names and link addresses, it
appears that the link path is to long and not the name
(text to display) that appears for the link.

Can anyone help with this problem?
