Hyperlink to files on computer

I am trying to create a hyperlink to a file on my computer which is in a
different subdirectory, not on the same drive as the OneNote program, and is
not a result of an MSOffice program. I have tried the following format:
file\\e:\windata\scgs\jump.wpd and then tried the <CTRL> click combination
with no luck. I also tried other combinations, including to MSOffice
programs -- also with no luck.

What have I done wrong?

Something like <file://e:/windata/scgs/jump.wpd> (including the angled
brackets) should work.

As would dragging the file onto the page from Explorer and choosing the
option from the resulting popup menu. Why do all that manual typing? ;)
