hyperlink to pdf document

My hyperlinks to pdf documents don't work- they are attempting to link to the
files on my hard drive. I am using Publisher 2003 and I understand from
reading the FAQs that I did my links incorrectly by navigating to them on my
hard drive. But I don't understand the advice to upload these external files
manually to the web. How do you do this? And then how do you change the
hyperlinks? Can someone give a more detailed answer to the correct way to
link to these documents? Please Help a frustrated newbie trying to get my
first web site up!

Thanks a lot. Such a simple answer but the information was SO hard to find.

For others who may be having the same problem- to manually upload your pdf
files on Windows XP using HTTP, all you have to do is drag and drop them into
the index_files folder in your "mywebsite" folder under My Network Places.
This uploads them automatically- then since they are in the same folder, you
just change the URL for the links to mypdffile.pdf and voila. If you put
them in a different folder, you have to include the folder name in the URL as
well.

David, My oiginal question was submitted under the wrong heading, so I am
copying here at your suggestion.....

"I am trying to create a hyperlink from a graphic on my website to a pdf
file on my desktop. I know how to create a link to a URL, but I don't know
what to type to create a link to a pdf file that is saved on my desktop. My
website was created using Publisher 2003. To see exactly what I'm talking
about, go to the HELPFUL INFO page of my website, then click on the ONLINE
BROCHURE icon and MAP TO CONDO icon on the website:
http://home.comcast.net/~sxmlady
OK, back to where we left off.....I read the article you suggested at
http://www.publishermvps.com/Default.aspx?tabid=157, but am still at a loss.
I have Windows XP and I upload using ftp://upload.comcast.net. I have the
website files in a folder on my desktop as well as in the upload comcast
file. I treid hyperlinking to both of these locations, but it didn't
work....at least not in Publisher Web Preveiw. What step am I missing?
Thanks, jan

I guess you aren't getting the article. Upload the pdf to your web server.
Wherever you copy it to, that path is it's URL. That URL is what you use for
the hyperlink. In the hyperlink dialog select the web address option and
type in the URL to the pdf. That's all there is to it.
If you find you are having difficulty understanding these things - URL,
hyperlink, etc. - I recommend you look online for some web site/web design
tutorials to assist you.

The only part I don't get is the upload to your "web server"....not sure what
the web server is. Guess that sounds pretty lame to you, but sure could use
clarification on just this one point. The rest I know. Thanks
