Hyperlink to template opens template, not a document

I am trying to create a new document from a template, not open the template
itself, when opening via hyperlink. There is a posted work-around for MS
Word 2003 that I've tried (target a shortcut to the template file) and works.
I am working with MS Word 2007 and am having no such luck. The templates
being accessed do not reside in the dedicated template folder on my hard
drive. Thanks and I look forward to a reply.
