Lisa,

Beth needs to know what version of Word you are using. Word is not
Windows 2000.

In *Word*, go to Menu: Help/About.

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for supplying the version of Word. :)

In Word 2002 if I insert a hyperlink to a template the template opens
rather than creating a new document based on the template. (That's
what I found previously so I thought it could be due to the version of
Word you are using.)

What steps did you use to create the hyperlink? Also, press Alt + F9
to toggle the field codes. Do each of the files have a *.dot file
extension?

to first create the hyperlink i right clicked on the area i wanted the hyperlink and then i clicked on create hyperlink then i put in the path of the document for the hyperlink to go to, and that opened the tempalte as a working document

They do have .dot at the end of them.

I have also tried making the template into a shortcut and typing in the path of the hyperlink manually, but it says that it can't open the specified file.

Hi Lisa,

The default behavior for a hyperlink to a template is to open the
template - not create a new document so I'm not sure what you are
encountering.

Just to make sure you aren't missing something use the following
steps:

1. Right-click the area for your hyperlink and select "Hyperlink"
2. On the left click "Existing file or web page"
3. Use the "Look in" drop down to navigate to the folder for your
template
4. Select the template (*.dot) from the list
5. Click "OK"
6. Test the hyperlink

i did what you said, but that is how i have orginally set up the hyperlnks and it opens up the tmeplate so that the template can be modified and saved, not so that it is forced to safe as a document, i don't want that to happen. I hope i am making myself clearer now. Is there anyway round this

Hi Lisa,

Thank you for clarifying. :)

Now that I understand what you are trying to do, use hyperlinks to
create a new document based on the template then this can not be done.
