hyperlink to Word 2003 doc won't merge

I have links from an intranet to Word documents that are connected to an Access database. The links work with Office 2000 and show the merged data, but with Office 2003, the merge does not work & the mail options are greyed out. I tried connecting to the database using different methods & even created an ODBC data source & tried connecting with ODBC, but I get the same results. Opening the document with Word 2003 works fine.
