Hyperlink to word .doc

Hyperlink does not seem to work with word type .doc files on my mac. I get
an error message stating "cannot open the selected file". If I locate the
file in the finder it opens fine. If I use hyperlink to open a pdf it works
fine, just doesn't seem to work with word .doc files.

Any ideas for fixes?

Thanks, dg

Are you trying to open files on your disks or files on the Web?

If opening local files, can you open Word documents by double-clicking them
in the finder? If this doesn't work, the hyperlink method probably won't
work either.

If you do have a problem opening by double-clicking, try Ctrl-clicking (or
right-clicking) on the file, and use Open With to select Word as the
associated app.

If opening files on the Web, does your browser of choice launch?

Mac OS X 10.2.6
Excel X for Mac service release 1
Word X for Mac service release 1

Insert (pull down menu)/ Hyperlink (apple-K)
Document Tab/ 'select' / choose word file on local disc 'Open'/ 'OK'

Above results in hyperlink being created and blue underlined text appears in
the appropriate cell. Clicking on the cell brings up an error message "this
file cannot be opened".

Note: this only happens with word files (with or without .doc suffix) - if I
choose another type of file eg. excel file (.xls) or a pdf then the
hyperlink works.

Well, it seems to work fine in my case. Are you sur the concerned documents
(or location) have the required permissions ?

There is a bug (or at least a sporadic bug) in the hyperlink method
that gives an incorrect relative path when you specify a file in a
different folder.

I just tested a case where I had two folders at the same level. In
folder 1 was the document "test.doc". In folder 2 was "test.xls".

In test.xls I chose Insert Hyperlink/Document/Select and browsed to
test.doc and clicked Open. The hyperlink inserted was

Folder1/test.doc

This generated the above error when I clicked on the hyperlink, due
to Folder1 not being in Folder2's hierarchy.

When I corrected the link to

../Folder1/test.doc

the link opened fine in Word.

It appears there is a bug - repeatable, not sporadic. Two questions;

1) how do I report this bug to the powers that be in the hope of a fix?

2) how do I 'correct the link' as you refer to below? There's no apparent
way to type in the file location or edit an incorrect location.

Thanks, dg
