Hyperlinking documents from my computer

I can't seem to get any documents on my computer to hyperlink on my website.
E-mails and websites work, but not PDF files or other documents. Does anyone
know the trick?

It is not a trick just the correct verbiage
Place the PDF file in a folder
Make a hyper link that is something like
"www.mydomain.com/downloads/document.pdf"
