Hyperlinking to a Word template...

I'm trying to create a link on an Intranet page, to a Word template, but am
having little success.

The document is a trouble report form containing fields, that I want my
people to bring up on their screen, fill in the 6 or so fields, then e-mail
to me.

I'd expect that when the link is clicked on, the document would not open as
a .dot file, but would open as a .doc file and would force the user to
assign it a unique name when saved. It does not.

How can I accomplish what I want to do...?

Clint, I think a link to a certain type of document is just that, a link to
that doct with its unique characteristics and problems, if any.

Why not create a .doc file from the template and make it read only? That way
the reader will have to save it with a unique name, as you desire.

Richard,

I tried that. When I mark the .doc file as read only, both from an Explorer
window, as well as in the Word | Options | Save dialog, and then click on
the Intranet page hyperlink that points to this .doc file, I can still save
over the "read-only" file.

I must be doing something wrong...

Also, I wonder if there's a way to put a "button" or something on the
document for the user to click on, which would then e-mail the filled-out
doc to me, without the user having to go to File | Send | Page by E-Mail
from their browser window...?

Hi, Clint,

I don't know much about Windows networking, but my thought is that your
permissions as network administrator or "powerful official user" under the
administrator is causing you to be unable to affect read only status in the
manner that you describe.

Logically, it would seem you would make the doct read only.

Because that is not happening, you may not have the requisite permissions to
get that done. In my brief but losing exposure to Xenix, the permissions
that could be assigned by the superuser were explicit about who could modify
the file, etc. This much you know I'm sure.

Unless . . . your link points to .doc file in directory X:\\docts/userforms
but you are ACTUALLY saving the document in a default directory that is
elsewhere, such as C:\\My documents\Admin.

Pretty lame, but it's all I can think of.

I know nothing about buttons, etc. Sorry.
