Hyperlinks are not carried over to Emails after Mail Merge

Outlook [2002] & Word[2002] - My document contains both http:// & mailto: hyperlinks and after Merge to Email these have become plain text. The images in my file are drawn from our website and these are converted to outbind objects after merging. Is there any way to stop these changes and create an html Email that has hyperlinks embedded?
