Hyperlinks Can't Find Services or Sites... Only in Word

I'm having trouble developing hyperlinks on a document that had been
functioning fine prior to my adding a column and resizing it. Now when I
attempt to use the hyperlinks, I get a message informing me that Word (I
assume it's Word that's attempting the link since that's the application in
which the table was created) has been unable to open (address of hyperlink)
giving as reason the inability to locate the Internet or proxy server.

Since I can successfully create links in Excel, Outlook Contacts, and
Outlook BCM, I assume there is something very specific to Word's searching
for these hyperlink addresses; something different than the procedure being
used by the other applications.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I'm using Word 2003 as part of Office
Professional 2003 in a Windows XP HE environment.
