This is one Outlook annoyance that has driven me nuts for years in older
versions even though right now I'm using 2007. Basically users can't launch
hyperlinks requiring certain apps like Media player or Windows Imaging, but
other URLs work OK. Media Player is the most annoying one, and as an example
my VP gets an E-mail from marketing with a URL of their new promo on the
network share, but Media player locks up when he tries to launch it. The URL
manually entered into Explorer works fine. Even if I copy the file locally
and re-direct the URL to it in an Outlook message Media Player still bolts
up, so the problem is with a URL in Outlook and not the actual location of
the file. Problem occurs corporate wide.
One 'hack' I learned years ago to get around this is to associate the
certain file type with Internet Explorer, which then 'fools' Outlook into
launching IE and hence IE parsing whatever it has to do (??). I'd otherwise
appreciate a more direct solution for this problem.
