Hyperlinks don't work

I'm having a problem getting Hyperlinks to work In Word X (SP1), Mac
OS X v10.2.8, iMac PowerPC G4.

I can create a hyperlink to another document ok, but when I click on it,
I get an error message saying "Cannot open the specified file".

When I create the hyperlink, in the "Link to" field, it adds the directory
path and file name and the path starts at the meeting point between
the directory path of the file containing the hyperlink and the linked
file.

I have managed to get round the problem by manually inserting the
entire path going back to the server name (very long). However this
isn't really a very satisfactory solution, as non-technical colleagues may
need to add or amend hyperlinks in the future and having to do that
would be too complicated and fiddly.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.
Regards
Sam

I can't tell if you want to have relative links or not...

I've had occasional problems with relative hyperlink paths that
involve hyperlinks between documents in different folders (i.e.,
Word has a bug). For instance, when I insert a hyperlink to Doc2 in
Doc1 with this folder hierarchy:

Folder1
Folder2
Doc1.doc

Folder3
Doc2.doc

Word comes up with the path

Folder3/Doc2.doc

You can correct the path to

../Folder3/Doc2.doc

and the hyperlink will work fine.

I¹m experiencing the same problem (hyperlinks to other documents result in a
³Cannot open the specified file.² error. I tried moving the docs I want to
link into the same folder as the doc that contains the link, but that didn¹t
help. What did was giving the linked file a one-word name. It¹s a pain, but
is seems to be working that way. However, if anyone has a solution that
doesn¹t involve renaming the linked filed, please let me know. Thanks Bob
