hyperlinks - file name length

D

Don Schmidt

First let me state I've been creating hyperlinks for several years; no
problems until today.

Is there a file name length limit when creating a hyperlinked file on a
Publisher 2000 created website.

The file name that I'm having difficulty with is

membersdirectory_8x11_07.pdf

Originally it was membersdirectory_8½x11_07.pdf

but I thought the ½ was the cause of the problem but even taking out the ½
it still doesn't work

If there is a limit, does anyone know the maximum name length?

Many thanks,

Hi Don,

I don't know an absolute answer to your question, but you are correct, a
forward slash is a no-no. I also seem to remember a limit for some reason.
Somewhere in times past I have had file names truncated, but I can't
remember the circumstances. Also, I have occasionally put a space where I
should have put an underscore, and of course that is not easily seen given
that the link is underlined. I also wonder if it couldn't be a server issue.
DOS file names were limited to 8? characters...perhaps a Unix server has
similar limitations? Check with your host for an answer on that one.

Sorry I don't have a good answer for you. Perhaps someone else will come
along with a better one.

Don,

I don't know what the limit is either, but I know you haven't reached
it. How? I've used much longer names in files! Perhaps you've simply
created the link with the wrong name? I did that today. The link was
supposed to be barnburner.html and I misspelled it: wine.html

David,
Mike,

I discovered the problem; old eyes looking to long at the problem.

The file contains the year, 2007, but if you write 2007 in the link, best
not to just have 07 in the file name.

Problem solved. Things can only get worse as these ol eyes and a 286 brain
try to carry on with the website.

Thanks guys.

ciao,

don
