Hyperlinks in TOC

When the cursor is on the first line of a TOC, the Style box says TOC, but
when it goes to the other lines, it says "Hyperlink." I can delete the
hyperlink style from the document and then each line reads "TOC." However,
it doesn't stay deleted but frequently returns.
I'm wondering why this happens.
With or without the hyperlink style, the TOC works. One click on any line
takes me to the appropriate page in the document, so it's not a "problem."
More of a curiosity, I'd say.
Why do some lines in the TOC become hyperlinks, but not all?
What is the difference, if both do the same thing?

In Word 2000 and above, all TOC entries are hyperlinked and, as you say,
they display the Hyperlink character style (even though it's not applied)
rather than the appropriate TOC level style. If you don't need the TOC
entries to be hyperlinked, you can unlink them (the page numbers will still
be hyperlinked as they were in earlier versions):

1. In Word 2002 and 2003, you can do this when you create the TOC, by
clearing the "Use hyperlinks instead of page numbers" box in the dialog
(which appears to apply only to Web formatting but doesn't).

2. In any version, you can remove the hyperlinks by editing the TOC field
directly. Press Alt+F9 to reveal the field code. Delete the \h switch,
Alt+F9 again to toggle the display back, then F9 to update the TOC.

Thanks, Suzanne,
I hace been deletiing the hyperlinks style. I will follow your suggestion
when creaqting TOSs.
I recall that there is a way, though I don't remember htow, to remove fields
from selected text using the F9 key. If the whole TOC were selected, could
that option not also be used?
I assdume that the hyperlink is for Internet connection. Why whould one
"need" to have TOC entries hyperlinked?

You can unlink a field using Ctrl+Shift+F9, but if you unlink your TOC, you
won't be able to update it (which is what F9 is for).

A lot of documents nowadays are used only on the computer apparently. Mine
are all designed for hard copy, so I certainly lose nothing by removing the
hyperlinks.
