hyperlinks not working

Donald S. Goldman

In Word and Excel 2003, all of a sudden when I use a hyperlink, I get an
error message:

"This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this
computer. Please contact your system administrator."

I am the administrator, so that is no help.

I have seen this issue mentioned about Office XP and about an upgrade to
internet explore 7 from version 6, but none of that applies here.

I use windows XP, home edition.

Hyperlinks seem to work in Outlook 2003. Although I rarely use
hyperlinks (actually mostly within documents on tables of contents
although external hyperlinks to urls are also not working with the same
error message), they seemed to work okay the last time I used them in
February of 2008.

Any ideas?

Hi Donald,

Is IE set as the default browser (IE Tools|Internet Options|Programs)?

Cheers

The answer was no. I use Firefox.

I set IE as the default and everthing worked fine, Thanks.

I then set it back to Firefox and everything still worked fine.

Thanks again. Do you know what went wrong?

BTW, I loved your book. When my company switched to Word from
WordPerfect and I was first learning WORD it was invaluable!!!

Don't know about why it is that setting IE set as the default browser should change Word's behaviour, just that doing so has been
found to fix the problem when another browser (which you hadn't mentioned) is installed.

My book?

Cheers
