Hi Steve,
To your questions:
When i click on the link during presentation or when i use "open hyperlink"
i get the following message:
"Opening "[hyperlink base]"
Hyperlinks can be harmful to your computer and data...Do you want to
continue?"
if i click yes, then the file is attempted to be opened by the web browser-
I know the workaround for this problem is to delete the hyperlink base, but
what if i need to use a hyperlink base for the external links...?
I inserted the internal links by marking some text & insert=>hyperlink. I
then chose "Link to: Place in This Document", and clicked on the slide i
wanted to link to which appeared in the list of slides.
In the "Edit Hyperlink" window i see exactly the same setting: "Place in
This Document" highlighted, the slide to be linked to also highlighted with
the right slide itself appearing in miniature to the right...

The problem:
Hyperlinks to other slides in the same presentation, are set to the
hyperlink base, regardless of what is indicated in the "Edit hyperlink"
window.
That means that i cannot use both "internal" links and external links to
files with a hyperlink base.
I use Powerpoint 2003 without SP3.
I think I understand what you mean but can you describe what you're seeing
when an internal link gets set to hyperlink base? How did you insert the
link in the first place and what appears in the Edit Hyperlink window?
Thanks.
