Hyperlinks - UNC Path converted to local drive on open

Hello:

Using Word and Outlook 2003, I have a meeting agenda in which I insert
hyperlinks to documents to be reviewed during the meeting. When I send this
agenda to meeting attendees as an attachment via Outlook, they open it and
none of the hyperlinks work. Originally, I thought it was because the link
was to a mapped drive, but even after inserting a UNC path the users cannot
open. The hyperlink is changed like this:

FROM:
file:///\\servername\directory\directory\documentname

TO:
c:\documents and settings\username\Local Settings\documentname

Why is this happening? I need the path to be left alone.

Thanks in advance for any help.
