Hyperlinks

I have upgraded to Publisher 2007 and am having a hard time wih the
hyperlinks. I've looked at the Help regarding this topic, and even proceeded
to follow the instructions given, but the links don't work. I need to know
how to link text to documents and to create links to other pages in the site.

S

Spike

To link text to a document
Highlight the text
Right click on the highlighted text
Select Hyperlink
In the address bar at the bottom of the window enter the location and the
name of the document

Example: /downloads/my_document.pdf

The file my_documents.pdf is in the folder downloads in the root directory
on the server

To create a link to other pages follow the same as above but instead of
entering an address select the icon on the left of the window "Place in this
document" and select the page you wish to link to.

Hello Spike,

I've done that and have even did the test to see if it works (hold down Ctrl
key and left mouse click and the link opens the doc, but when I upload and
open the site, the links don't work.

As for linking to another page (text reads: contact us) if I want to make
contact us a link to the contact page within the site, if my website address
is: www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org, what would the remainder of the path look like?
Nothing is working.

S

Spike

I looked at your links:

Example:
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/BMBC_Home3/PrayerList.doc
In order for this link to work the document would have to be in the folder
"MBC_Home3"
Where did you put the document on the sever?

Example:
F:\My Web Sites\BMBC Home3\About_Us_files\Page1296.htm
In order for the contact us page to come up the page1296.htm would have to
be in the folder "BMBC Home3\About_Us_files" AND you are pointing to the F
drive on your computer (that won’t work on the web).

The page you are looking for is located at:
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/index_files/Page1296.htm

Avoid using CAPS in links as lower case and upper case sensitivity will
cause errors.

Good Morning Spike,

Thank you for your responses. In answer to your question, I upload via FTP
and place them in the "public htm" folder.

I won't have time this morning to work on it as I have other work at the
church to do. Also, if you are still looking, I have a pdf file containing
"Registration Form" for VBS and want it to be accessable to those who want to
download it. Can you give me a path for that as well.

From what I've just read, your info is putting me in the game, for when I
was using 2003, it worked very different than the newer version, so I'm
having more difficulty in finding my way.

Thank you so very much for your help and may you have a blessed day.

S

Spike

Since I not see the files on the server and you are needing more files to be
available to users, I suggest that you consider creating a folder on the
server "downloads" in the root directory (public htm folder). Place all
documents, files for the users to see or download in there. Keep ALL file
names and folder names in lower case and NO spaces.

Registration Form
should be something like registration_form.pdf
Also I would stay away from using doc files as not all users can not read
them. Stay with pdf files if possible.

Your links will look like this:

/downloads/my_file.pdf
/downloads/abc.pdf

Etc.

Hi Spike,

I read what you are saying, but I'm not so certain how to make it happen.
I've created a folder (downloads) and put the "kos_registration_form.pdf) in
it. Now when I make the link "downloads", what is to go in front of the
"downloads/kos_registration_form.pdf" in the address line, because right now
it is in a folder on my "f" drive?

As I stated before, I am confused as to how things work now.

My website address is: www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org
The root folder is: BMBC Home3
My web page files are: index_files, About Us_files, Calendar_files, Contact
Us_files, Gallery_files, Health_files, Ministrie_files, Products_files,
Reflections_files and the new folder - downloads

Each of the listed folders above have the web pages in them with all the
files/images for each.
For example: Page 380 is a HTML doc that opens the web page About Us when
you click on it. So this is where I get really confused, because I don't
know how to create a link to go to another web page or a doc.

I hope this makes sense to you.

If I may jump in... I think it might be easier for you if you write an
'absolute link' to your pdf file. 'Relative links' can be confusing and
writing the full path to the files can make things more clear.

After you upload the subfolder 'downloads' to your root directory or root
folder and upload the 'kos_registration_form.pdf' file to the 'downloads'
folder, then the link to that file will be:

www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/downloads/kos_registration_form.pdf
or
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/downloads/kos_registration_form.pdf

I would also point out that when you go to your website via
'www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org' , you go to www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/index.htm . Then
when you click the 'About Us' link on your home page, it will take you to
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/index_files/Page380.htm . In other words it
takes you to the 'index_files" folder on our host and finds the
'Page380.htm' file. Note that all your other pages are also in the
'index_files' folder. When you click any of the navbar buttons on your
default home page then it will take you to the file within the index_files
folder...it does not take you to the other subfolders in your root
directory. You do not need the other subfolders.

To explain further, here is a link to your 'Reflections_files" folder:
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/Reflections_files/
You will notice that you get a listing of the files in that folder because
there is not default .htm file. But now go to this link:
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/Reflections.htm Notice that it is the same as
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/index.htm .

You can keep producing your web files as you want, but the reality is that a
viewer will stay within the files in the 'index_files' folder if they arrive
at your site via www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org ...because they will start at
www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/index.htm and all the links from that page will point
to the 'index_files' folder...not the other folders you have created. That
means that your 'Reflections' page is located here:
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/index_files/Page1201.htm and again at
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/Reflections_files/Page1201.htm not
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/Reflections.htm as you intended.

If you want custom file names, then go to your main Pub file. Go to the
'Reflections' page in your publication > Tools > Web page options and under
'Publish to the web" in the 'File name' field type in 'Reflections' without
the quote. Now when you publish to the web and produce you new web files,
Publisher will call that page 'Reflections.htm' instead of 'Page1201.htm'.
And the absolute link to that page will be
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/index_files/Reflections.htm . Do this for each
of your pages in your publication, but do not leave spaces. For the About us
page use either 'AboutUs.htm' or 'About_us.htm' and perhaps avoid upper case
altogether and just call the file 'aboutus.htm'. Just be consistent.

I hope I haven't confused you further, but it was obvious that you needed to
understand how to write absolute links to your files and your web pages, and
that also meant that I had to discuss how you have organized your web
directory. You simply do not need all those other subdirectories/subfolders
nor are they really accomplishing what you wanted them to accomplish. The
good news is that now you know how to write the link to the pdf file and any
other pdf file that you put into the 'downloads' folder. Clear as mud now?

JUMP IN, JUMP IN the water's fine ....
Thanks for the help. I usually start out with relative links (easier) but
you probably have a better solution with the absolute links. I can always
depend on Verbose David to bail out Terse Spike :)

Good Morning David & Spike,

After reading your response, it does make more sense to me as to what I need
to be doing and how. That's not to say it will work as smooth as you have
explained, but at least I have a better understanding.

All of the other folders were created by lack of knowledge. In creating the
site I was using the principles from the previous version and didn't know
they were not needed. My main objective is for visitors to view the site and
navigate with the least amount of problems. I do want to ask while I am
sending you so that the thought will already be in your mind if and when this
occurs.

I have the downloads folder on the server (public/html) and I've placed the
pdf file in it. Now I will revisit the link to give it the proper address
path. Once all changes are made and uploaded - if the link doesn't take me
to the destination as planned, then what (something to think about, so you
can give additional help if need be).

I'm praying for positive results, but this has really been an adventure and
if this wasn't for the church, I would have not put this kind of time into
it, but know I am grateful for you and your team. There are still good
people in the world that care.

God Bless You and thank you so much,

S

Spike

David

Without knowing the level of expertise of the OP, it is difficult for me to
come up with the best words as not to belittle the persons knowledge but yet
get them on the right track. I detest people that talk down to others in
need. I am not saying that YOU do that. Your detailed instructions are
among the best on the forum. Bottom line, get the web site up and running
with as many or as few words as necessary !!

Spike

DavidF

Look, if you want to keep it simple for you and for your viewers, then just
publish and upload the basic index.htm file and the index_files folder and
you are done. You don't have to give each page a custom file name. And as
per the link to the pdf file, just upload it the downloads folder, put the
pdf file in it, and try the link. If you write the link correctly it will
work.

Don't let my 'verbose' style as Spike puts it, put you off. This is not
complex stuff, but you created a bunch of needless files and directories and
I could find no succinct way to explain that to you...or should I say
'terse' way.

Good luck.

Hey terse...I like your description...just call me verbose...or wordy for
short ;-).

But I will have you know that the answer to his original question was
written in 6 lines...not bad...I am getting better.

The problem came when I looked at his web directory and I could find no
succinct way to describe what he was doing...oh well. Short or
long...hopefully the posters will let us know if they need more
clarification.

Good Afternoon Team,

Well, I almost expected the results I got. The file doesn't open. I've
deleted all the excess, created the links as you said.

I will have to leave for now, but is there some other way I can provide info
for you to look futher into this. I don't know what to do.

S

Spike

kos_registration_form.pdf.pdf

Look at the line above and notice how you named the file Take the last
".pdf" off of the file and reload it to the downloads folder and it will
work. Then http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/downloads/kos_registration_form.pdf
will bring up the file. Get this working then we will move on with some
more of your links.

Example from your web site: F:\My Web Sites\BMBC Home3\prayer_list.doc
Notice the F:\ That is pointing to your hard drive. Needs to be
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/downloads/prayer_list.doc (and I said in
another post, look at making the document a pdf file so it can be read by
all).

Hang in there, 1 at a time and you will be happy.

Hi Spike,

I didn't see that, but I hate to tell you that it's still not working.

I'm going to be out this evening, but if I can long in I will.

I appreciate your efforts. Now you see why I am pulling hair.

Bob

That is because the file in your downloads folder is named
"kos_registration_form.pdf.pdf"
You need to replace it with "kos_registration_form.pdf"

Spike

R

rjlump54

Hello Spike,

I corrected the matter as stated below and still the link doesn't work, so
I've got a little time now if you can assist me. Our radio broadcast went
out yesterday directing people to the site to download from the link, so I
hope to get it up and working asap.

Thanks,
Bob

D

DavidF

You did not correct the matter. The file that you have on the server in the
downloads folder is named:

kos_registration_form.pdf.pdf

And it should be called:

kos_registration_form.pdf

Log on to your host, delete the old file, and upload the correct file.
