Hyperlinks

I wrote a long document and made hyperlinks from the Table of Contents to
individual Chapters.

Normally, when I click on a hyperlink (blue and underlined) in my browser,
the link takes me to the destination of the hyperlink.

However, I find that if I click on my hyperlink in my document, a balloon
appears, telling me to "CTRL + Click" to follow the hyperlink.

Why this unnecessary and cumbersome two-step procedure instead of a direct
link with a click on the underlined link??

Any way of avoiding this nuisance? I am using WinXP and Word XP.

Hi Walter

Tools > Options > Edit. Un-tick "Use CTRL + Click to follow hyperlink".

Shauna has given you the answer you need, but note that you have evidently
gone to a lot of unnecessary trouble if you have constructed a hyperlinked
TOC by hand, since Word does this automatically if you use Insert |
Reference | Index and Tables | Table of Contents.

Thanks to both of you for your help. I am just wondering: Was this
CTRL+Click feature for hyperlinks imbedded in my document when I wrote it?
Or does this show up only when a Word doc is read, depending on the setting
in Tools > Edit?

I am asking because other people, too, have to follow the CTRL+ Click
routine when they read my document. This seems to be a default setting in MS
Word. Can I avoid this "feature" by setting up my hyperlinks differently?

Ctrl+click was introduced in Word 2002 to make it easier to select and edit
hyperlinks (so that you don't go haring off to the target when you click on
the text); this is especially vital when TOCs are hyperlinked. If you are
familiar with hyperlink behavior in previous versions of Word, then this
would be new and disconcerting for you.

As I understand it then, the CTRL+ Click is not imbedded in the link when
the link is created, but only depends on the version of Word that is used to
read the document.

IOW, if one of my readers uses 2002, he has to use CTRL+Click, unless
disabled in Tools. Whereas, a reader with Word 2000 and earlier would just
Click to follow the hyperlink, just like a browser?

Precisely. There is nothing different about the hyperlink itself, just the
behavior of the version of Word used to view the document.
