Hi Leen;
Apparently the replies have been posted but the Mactopia site has had
difficulty communicating with NNTP over the weekend so they haven't been
showing up in newsreaders.
Hyperlinks to local files should look something like:
file://localhost/Volumes/GigaTaz/Content%20from%20CubbyHole/Garbage%20Files/
BeneWin.txt
I have seen reports that a lengthy path can cause issues but not exactly of
the type you're reporting. If the retained path is incorrect, however, that
would certainly explain why the file can't be opened - it simply can't be
found. Since it is apparently not a problem with the file association or the
file itself I'd suggest recreating the hyperlink. See if the new one
behaves.

Hi Lane;
It's hard to tell from the limited information
Can you open the target file directly if you navigate to it in Finder &
double-click the icon?
Yes, no problem
How [step-by-step] are you creating the hyperlink?
Put the cursor on the particular cell, rightclick en click on
hyperlink. Then a 'wizard-ish' window opens and I just followed the
instructions.
What do you mean by "map" - folder, volume, drive...?
Map is poor translation, but I meant a folder
Is there a network
involved?
No
How lengthy is the path to the target file's location?
Here's a weird thing. The path in the wizard-ish window lacks the first
part of the actual path.
When putting the cursor on the cell a light yellow box shows up with
another 'impossible' path. As if two separate paths are connected.
Do any of
the element names in the path use other than alphanumeric characters?
Here's the path showed in the edit window:
G4S/Facturen/2008/Specificatie%20factuur%20G4S%202126.1412.08.xlsx
It is lacking the actual start of the path
The part which shows up in the light yellow box is:
file://localhost/users/lane/documents/lourtas
BV/aanzetBV/administratie/G4S/Facturen/2008/Specificatie factuur G4S
2126.1412.08.xlsx
This path is 'impossible' it doesnot exists
What version of Word created the target document?
Office 2008 for Mac
What is the file type
(.doc, .docx...)?
docx and xlsx
Is there any VBA used in the document?
No
What - exactly - is the wording in the error message?
The file asked for cannot be opened. (literally translated from Dutch)
Specific version info for Office might also be helpful.
Version 12.1.3 Last update 12.1.5

Hello,
I like to connect a invoice number (in an excel cell) to the
corresponding invoice (a Word file) with a hyperlink. When I do this I
get an error that file cannot be opened.
The files are in different maps.
What's wrong
I use Office 2008 for mac and Leopard 10.5.5
