Hello,

I like to connect a invoice number (in an excel cell) to the
corresponding invoice (a Word file) with a hyperlink. When I do this I
get an error that file cannot be opened.
The files are in different maps.
What's wrong

I use Office 2008 for mac and Leopard 10.5.5

Hi Lane;

It's hard to tell from the limited information :)

Can you open the target file directly if you navigate to it in Finder &
double-click the icon?

How [step-by-step] are you creating the hyperlink?

What do you mean by "map" - folder, volume, drive...? Is there a network
involved? How lengthy is the path to the target file's location? Do any of
the element names in the path use other than alphanumeric characters?

What version of Word created the target document? What is the file type
(.doc, .docx...)? Is there any VBA used in the document?

What - exactly - is the wording in the error message?

Specific version info for Office might also be helpful.

double-click the icon? Yes I can

How [step-by-step] are you creating the hyperlink?

I used the right mouseclick, clicked on Hyperlink -> insert hyperlink,
in other words the common 'wizard'
What do you mean by "map" - folder, volume, drive...? Is there a network
involved? How lengthy is the path to the target file's location? Do any of
the element names in the path use other than alphanumeric characters?

What I meant is the folder of course, a bit of a poor translation.
There's no network involved.
The cell is part of a excel file (xlsx) and the hyperlink refers to a
word docx but in another folder.
What version of Word created the target document?
Word 2008 for Mac, Version 12.1.3 last updat e 12.1.4
What is the file type
(.doc, .docx...)? Is there any VBA used in the document? Docx and Xlsx, no BVA
What - exactly - is the wording in the error message?

"Cannot open the file" after clicking the hyperlink, as translated from Dutch.

How [step-by-step] are you creating the hyperlink?
Used right (mighty) mouse click, clicked hyperlink and used the
'wizard' as it comes.
What do you mean by "map" - folder, volume, drive...? Is there a network
involved? How lengthy is the path to the target file's location? Do any of

No network involved. I meant ofcourse Folder, it was a poor translation
from Dutch
Files are in different folders
Example path:
G4S/Facturen/2008/Factuur%20G4S%202126.1412.08.docx
What version of Word created the target document? Office 2008 for Mac
What is the file type
(.doc, .docx...)? Both xlsx and docx
Is there any VBA used in the document? No

What - exactly - is the wording in the error message?
Just 'Cannot open file' literally transpated from Dutch
Specific version info for Office might also be helpful.

Version 12.1.3, last update 12.1.5

Hello again,

I found something peculiar
The path as highlighted when the cursor 'is on the cell (the light
yellow box) shows a path that doesn't exists. The path is:
file://localhost/users/lane/documents/LourtasBV/aanzetBV/administratie/G4S/facturen/2008/factuurG4S
2126.1412.08

However, the part '
file://localhost/users/lane/documents/LourtasBV/aanzetBV/administratie/
' exists but the following part ' G4S/facturen/2008/factuurG4S
2126.1412.08 ' is a part of another path.

Put the cursor on the particular cell, rightclick en click on

Map is poor translation, but I meant a folder

Here's a weird thing. The path in the wizard-ish window lacks the first

Hi Leen;

Apparently the replies have been posted but the Mactopia site has had
difficulty communicating with NNTP over the weekend so they haven't been
showing up in newsreaders.

Hyperlinks to local files should look something like:

file://localhost/Volumes/GigaTaz/Content%20from%20CubbyHole/Garbage%20Files/
BeneWin.txt

I have seen reports that a lengthy path can cause issues but not exactly of
the type you're reporting. If the retained path is incorrect, however, that
would certainly explain why the file can't be opened - it simply can't be
found. Since it is apparently not a problem with the file association or the
file itself I'd suggest recreating the hyperlink. See if the new one
behaves.

Interesting discovery... But I don't believe Excel "creates" the path. My
understanding is that it merely records the path reported to it by Finder,
so you may on to something.

Try starting your Mac from the OS X disk [or other bootable volume] & run
Disk Utility - Repair Disk (not Repair Disk Permissions) to see if it finds
& repairs any errors. If it does run it again until no errors are reported.

Well, if that didn't do it I'm afraid I don't know what else to suggest :-(
I've played around with this a bit even though I don't really use hyperlinks
in Excel all that much. Any of the ones I've created seem to work as
expected no matter where or what file I link to. Since I can't recreate the
problem it's a bit difficult to troubleshoot.

If you compare the typed path to the one that gets inserted by the Insert
Hyperlink - Select method are you still seeing a difference? Since the path
apparently is being mishandled the only other idea I can offer is to get the
10.5.5 (or the now-available 10.5.6) Combo Update from the Apple Downloads
site. See if installing that makes a difference - the Combos are more
effective than what you get through Software Update.
