Hypertext not working correctly

V

vbolug

I am using Word 2000 on a desktop, networked to a server at work.

I try using insert hyperlink to link to various files (ie financial
statements or other monthly records) in a word document.

It appears that when I either save the document or email it to peers- the
hypertext link no longer works. It appears that Word saves it to point to
somewhere in my user Documents adn Settings directory as a temporary path-
so even when I pull up my email or read the email I just sent myself - the
hypertext link does not work

I would like to know if this is a word problem- if there is a fix, I can' t
imagine it being an Outlook problem

Additionally:

I found an obscure reference to using:

file://I:\filepath/subdirectory1/subdirectory2/name.xls as a way of
creating hypertext links on the fly. This does not work reliably either.
WHen I open up the hypertext link to edit it, i find something like this

...\../../subdirectory1/subdirectory2/name.xls....
so the drive path has been effectively obliterated from the document.

Anyone have any clues as to how to use hypertext links in word to point to a
common server path in a network?? At this point, hypertext links only
appear to work for website references or jumps contained within the document
being distributed. I would like to be able to link to files within a common
server area: (The server at work is the I: drive for everyone.)

Thanks
Paul

You need to specify the entire network path to your file, then it will
work correctly.

For example, \\domain\network drive name\file name

or

\\domain\network drive name\folder\file name

vbolug.... you say the document is on a network drive. I assume you are
"mapped" to that network drive under indicator I:. To find out the
domain and other information needed go to your windows explorer. The
information for what is mapped to I: will be shown as follows:

Network Drive Name on 'domain name' (I:)

So, if the information was as follows:

Oxley on 'abc1234' (I:)

If the document on this network drive is test.doc, your hyperlink in the
document would be:

\\abc1234\Oxley\test.doc

If the document was inside a folder called myfolder, for example, the
hyperlink would be:

\\abc1234\Oxley\myfolder\test.doc

Simple as that!

I got it all figured out yesterday at work!
Works like a charm- we sent emails back and forth with word docs- nothing got corrupted....

Thanks!
