Hyphen becomes em dash

Windows XP Publisher 2003
Whenever I type a hyphen and then hit the space bar, the hyphen
automatically becomes an em dash. If I backspace it changes back to a
hyphen. This is becoming very cumbersome. Is there a setting I need to
change to stop this from happening?
