I Publisher 2003, XP if have trouble with the hyphen.

When I type a hyphenated word like set-up, it works fine. However when I
want to type a space before and after the hyphen, it always comes out without
the space, almost like an em dash. I then hit the backspace button and the
spaces appear befpre and after the dash. Is there a way around this, that I
don't have to always type a backspace?

E.g.
Joe Brown - 2 (In publisher it would come out Joe Brown--2 if I didn't type
in the back space.

Hi Mary
Thanks for your response. I may not have explained my problem clearly.

I do have the em dash selected in 'AutoFormat as you Type" because I want
it when I type two hyphens together.

So when I type a hyphenated word with only one hyphen, everything's OK.
However when I type [word] [space] [hyphen] [space] [word] I end up with
[word][no space] [em dash] [no space] [word]. I don't want the em dash in
this case - only [word] [space] hyphen [space] [word}

I tho't that an em dash should appear only when I type 2 hyphens not 1 hyphen.
Am i doing something grammatically incorrect that is causing this?

Thanks for your help

When the em appears, press the backspace, the em dash will revert to a hyphen.

Thanks Mary... that's what I've been doing but thought perhaps there was
something simpler in a setting change. Thanks for confirming this for me.

You could disable the option in AutoFormat as you type, and then
manually create a rule in the AutoCorrect tab that converts -- to an Em
or En dash.

Just curious about why you would want to surround a hyphen with spaces. The
example you give of

set-up

would if typed

set - up

give the strange possibility of showing up as

set
- up

if it appeared at the end of a line.
A combination of non-breaking spaces and hyphens might be more appropriate.
CTRL+SHIFT+<spacebar> CTRL+SHIFT+<hyphen> CTRL+SHIFT+<spacebar>
which would force "set - up" to stay together.

Thanks Ed. I think you came up with the solution that will work for me.
I appreciate it!!

The example of set-up was where the hyphen works fine. It is other cases
where I need spaces before and afer the hyphen... not inside a word, but
after a word.
My problem has been solved.. thanks for your interest.
