hyphenation

Moshe Wisnefsky

Hello all.
I'm trying to manually hyphenate a long document, but nothing happens.
Also, when I instruct Word to show optional hyphens, none show up. I
would have thought that there is some default hyphenation
dictionary/database that comes with Word. Is this not so, and does
that mean that we have to construct our own from scratch, etc?
Thanks in advance,
Moshe

You won't see the optional hyphens unless you have nonprinting characters
displayed. Also, make sure that the text is not formatted as "(no proofing)"
or "Do not check spelling or grammar" in Tools | Language | Set Language.

Thanks, Suzanne. I do have nonprinting characters displayed, but still
no optional hyphens appear (unless I put them there myself). "Do not
check spelling or grammar" in Tools|Language|Set Language is not
checked. How do I make sure that the text is not formatted as "[no
proofing]"?

"(no proofing)" is the Word 97 and earlier version of "Do not check spelling
or grammar." Maybe the hyphenation zone is so set that no words are eligible
for hyphenation?

I tried adjusting the hyphenation zone to various sizes to see if that
would make a difference, but it didn't. Somehow the fact that no
optional hyphens are visible except for ones that I insert myself
makes me suspect that there is a hyphenation dictionary or database
that is missing on my system. Possible?

Possibly. Unfortunately, I personally do not use the auto-hyphenation
feature (I prefer to hyphenate manually), so I'm afraid I can't help much.
