I am a student and you are asking $149.00. Yeah Right!

I can't believe I spent a fortune on my new computer, got all of the extras,
and now I'm forced out of Word unless I pay up. I could believe a low down
software developer pulling a trick like this to suck people in, but not MS.
There's not a chance I'm going to use it if I have to pay. I am only using
it to type up presentations for my studies. Give me a break, I don't care
about any of the other Office tools, just Word!

Microsoft didn't make the decision as to what software to bundle with
your computer.
Complaining here won't help you, because the only people reading and
replying here are peers, other Office users who paid for the software.
Check with your university to see if they don't offer a campus-wide
license for Office.

WordPad is free (comes bundled with Windows). It saves files in the Word
document format. And the OpenOffice word processor can be downloaded for free,
as well, I believe. They may not have all the Word functionality, but you get
a good deal for what you pay (nothing).

I fully can understand the OP's reaction btw. A friend of mine needed a
new laptop and so the both of us went shopping for one on Saturday. The
guy in the store (Best Buy) used as a selling point that Office was on
it. He tried to paint it as a great deal and almost barely mentioned
that it was good for 90 days. Even after I called him on it and got him
to frankly admit that it was a trial version, he couldn't stop talking
about it in a way that would make anyone believe that they are really
getting Office.
So yeah, an Office trial version was used as a selling point in a barely
legal way (after all, he did state it was only good for 90 days without
being asked about it).
I actually ended up asking if they had a laptop that was a clean XP
install and not loaded with all their trial ware stuff (which included
Works, some Office apps, MS Money, NAV, etc etc)

Hi Patrick,
I fully can understand the OP's reaction
Certainly. OTOH I'm continually astounded by people in general, these
days, who expect to get so much for free and complain bitterly when told
it costs something. When they work, they expect to get paid; why should
they think others don't?

There was a time when stores were smaller, things cost more, and the
sales personal were TRAINED and truly helpful. We knew, when we entered a
discounter, that "let the buyer beware" was in force. Nowadays, no one is
willing to pay for the "support at the source", but still expects it. And
the belief that they can get it by passing laws and suing amazes me.

Last couple of times I went shopping for new computers, I searched out a
little one-man shop where I still get this kind of service. And if you
want, he puts the machines together with just what you need - no more and
no less. Since I have MSDN, all I need on the machine is the BIOS :) Had
to put in some more RAM, replace a hard-drive (no data loss, since he
knows his stuff) and a couple of fans, but it's still going strong after
five years.

You get what you pay for, and TANSTAAFL. Everything goes in cycles and the
dialectic exists. I'm waiting for the wheel to come back around to
recognizing quality and preferring less "stuff", but what one has is good
and lasting. May take a while, though :)

I just order the parts online and do the building myself. But
unfortunately that doesn't work for laptops...
