I am limited to file sizes by my host. Do I have to resize photos

My web host limits the total file size of the site 20mb. Do I have to resize
photos that I put in the photo gallery. IE; I have a photo say 1mb, do I have
to resize it to 70kb or does photo gallery front page do it automatically?

You have to resize the photos. Irfanview (free form
http://www.irfanview.com) is very good at this optimisation, if you do not
have your own image editor.

You should anyway, whether there is an web size limit or not.
1- Lower resolution limits someone using your pix for their own.
2- Download time is reduced with smaller files.
