I am losing the formating when I save

ibook G4 running office X. I've been running the same system and
software for a while. I don't think I changed anything, but now every
document I open using the <open> command has lost its styles and
replaced apostrophes and quote marks with i. I've reset preferences
to be sure it was saved in Word document format. I can't find any
other setting to change! Help!
I did "organize" styles to transfer styles from one document to
another. Could I have loused something up? Like Normal?

An addition. If I start in the finder and double click on the file,
it opens fine.

Okay. Key point there. When you use File | Open, make sure that the
Open dropdown is NOT set to Recover Text from Any File or anything else
funky. You can use that setting to recover a corrupt document---but,
unfortunately, it is sticky and the setting continues to affect future
documents. Sounds like what happened to you.

Word 2004 made this error difficult to run into accidentally, I think.

Thank You! That did the job!
