i am trying to get a cell with graduated shading in excel 2003

i am trying to get a cell with graduated shading in excel 2003. My ideal look
will be a gentle shading at the centre of the cell (or merged cells) thinning
out to nothing at the border.

You can't in 2003. You can do it in 2007 though
