I am using office 2003 Professional Edition on windows vista SP1 and it seems
to work fine. Have just purchased a new laptop with Windows Vista and am
contemplating purchasing the Office 2007 Home and student version. Is this
necessary or should i just stick to my professional office 2003 version?

Depends upon what you want to do with it. You can find out about the
new features here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx

Keep in mind, by the way, that if you use Outlook the Home & Student
Edition of Office 2007 is going to come up short for you - it doesn't
include Outlook. You'll want one of the other suites (Small Business,
Professional, etc.)

If you have a retail rather than OEM Office 2003 license, you may
legally install Office 2003 on your laptop in addition to your
desktop, but you may only use Office 2003 on one of these machines at
a time. If this is the case, then you wouldn't need to buy another
Office license. So is Office 2007 H&S worth it compared to $0 for an
Office version you're happy with? Probably not.

OTOH, if you have an OEM Office 2003 license (Office 2003 came pre-
installed on your desktop PC), then legally you'd have to buy a
separate license for your laptop. If that's the case, your choices are
between buying an Office 2003 license or an Office 2007 license. I'd
point out here that Office 2003 Professional includes Access but
Office 2007 H&S doesn't. If you need Access, then Office 2007 H&S
really isn't an option. And I'm not sure Office 2007 H&S comes with
Outlook either.

There is an Office 2007 file format compatibility pack on the Microsoft
download site. http://download.microsoft.com/ In fact it is listed as the
most popular download today. You might try that first and see if it meets
your requirements.

I used the trial version of Office 2007 for a few weeks. Excel (which I use
extensively) crashed at random, I didn't like the Ribbon UI one bit and
Office 2007 offered no advantage over Office 2003 in my case. Hence, I
decided not to shell out the $$$s MS wanted for Office 2007.

BTW, since reverting to Office 2003, the crashes have disappeared.

PS

Hello,

I just ordered a new HP laptop with Vista Operating System. The HP tech and
Microsoft Help Desk both told me 2003 Windows Professional is not compatible
with Vista. They said I can read the files but not edit them. I have been
using 2003 Professional + Visio + Project Scheduler on XP.

Can you all please confirm that you have not experienced any issues using
this application on Vista? I appreciate it.

More examples of "tech" people not knowing their arse from their elbow.....I
bet they tell you to format C: and re-install once a month as well....

Office 2003 is fully compatible with Windows Vista. However, you may not be
able to read items created in Office 2007 without the Compatibility Pack for
Office. You can get this from the Microsoft Office website.

I've been using Office Professional 2003 on Vista for several months now,
with ZERO problems. That tech was talking out of the back of his/her unwashed
neck!
