I am using office 2003 on Vista editing documents is very unstabl

I have a new vista laptop and am editing manuals that were created on windows
xp. I am using the same software program word 2003. When I try to number a
selection the whole document numbers. Every time I try to save it tells me
its read only and I have to rename. When I change a style it doesnt hold.
Finally the document or Word is so unstable it stops responding. As I use
these manuals for training I find it frustrating I cant update them.
