I am using Word 2003 and Jason (the tab between the

number and the text keeps returning as .25" in certain
documents. I have attached heading styles to the
numbering of course and have set Tab space after (Jason)
at the correct space (for example. The number is at .5
and Jason would be at 1 and Indent at would be at 0).

I only have trouble with numbering schemes that indent at
is 0.

Help this poor lowly legal consultant!

Hi Christine:

It sounds like those documents may have been opened on Word 97 at some
stage.

Create a brand new blank document, copy everything EXCEPT the last paragraph
mark from the bad document and paste into the new one. Do your selection
very carefully: if you copy the paragraph marker at the end of the document,
you copy the problem!

Save as a new file name. You should now be able to get control of the
numbering. Word 97 was capable of doing such damage to the numbering that
it would go into "read-only" mode and you couldn't do anything with it.

Word 2003 "should" sort it out, but sometimes it can't. There's a service
pack coming out for Word 2003 which seems to improve this.

Hope this helps

Unfortunately, that is not the case because the document
it is behaving badly in is using a brand new Word 2003
template.

Any other suggestions?

I was promised by every vendor that the Jason tab will be eliminate

Did you see John McGhie's response posted eight hours before your remark
explaining one way to get such a problem into a Word 2003 document?

As Dayo Mitchell puts it:
Please note that WordForums.com is a very inefficient way to access these
newsgroups. It is not an independent, self-sufficient website, but simply
piggybacks onto public, international newsgroups. It mirrors the Microsoft
public news server, and mirrors it slowly at that. Your questions show up on
the server hours after you post them, and it seems the answers show up back
at the site late. The majority of the people who may respond to your
question are not using the site.

See here for some suggestions on other ways to access the newsgroups,
including how to find the best VBA group for you.

Try http://communities.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.asp

or, if you can use Outlook Express follow these steps:

1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
2. In the Internet Account dialog box, click Add, and then click News.
The Internet Connection Wizard starts. Follow these steps in the wizard:
1. On the first screen, in the Display name box, type the name that
other users will see when you post a message to the newsgroup, and then
click Next.
2. On the second screen, type your full e-mail address in the E-mail
address box, and then click Next.
3. On the third screen, in the News (NNTP) Server box, type the name of
your news server. To subscribe to the newsgroups hosted on Microsoft's
servers, type msnews.microsoft.com. If you don't know the name of your news
server, contact your Internet provider.
4. If necessary, select the My news server requires me to log on check
box, and then click Next. If you don't know whether your server requires you
to log on, contact your Internet provider. The Microsoft server does not
require a user name and password.
5. On the last screen, click Finish.
3. Click Close, and then click Yes when asked if you want to download
newsgroups from the account you just created. The Newsgroup Subscriptions
dialog box appears.
4. Select the newsgroups you want to use, click Subscribe, and then
click OK.

Note Most of Microsoft newsgroups use this naming convention:
microsoft.public.application_name.specific_area. For example: you could
subscribe to microsoft.public.office.dataanalyzer, or
microsoft.public.excel.programming. However, that isn't always the case.
Don't be afraid to browse the list of groups in order to find something that
you think will be useful.

5. On the Tools menu, click Options, click the Read tab, and then clear
the Get 300 headers at a time check box.
6. Click the Maintenance tab, clear the Delete new messages n days
after being downloaded check box, and then click OK.
Step 5 allows you to download and read all the newsgroup's postings when you
first subscribe. Step 6 allows you to read older messages.

Subscribe or unsubscribe to newsgroups

After you establish a connection to your newsgroup server, you add
newsgroups to your list by subscribing. You can subscribe or unsubscribe to
newsgroups at any time. Typically, you use the group name as a guide when
subscribing. For example, a name such as
microsoft.public.office.developer.outlook.forms would be a good place to
start if you need help writing a custom form for Outlook.
To subscribe
1. Start Outlook Express.
2. In the folder pane, click the name of your news server. For example,
if you established a connection to Microsoft's server, click
msnews.microsoft.com.
3. In the main viewing pane, click Newsgroups.
4. In the Newsgroup Subscriptions dialog box, select a newsgroup from
the list, and then click Subscribe.
5. Repeat the previous step to subscribe to additional newsgroups, and
then click OK when you finish.
6. In the main viewing pane, double-click the name of the new
newsgroup. If you only want to receive new messages since the last time you
visited, select the New messages only check box, and then double-click the
newsgroup name.

Note When you subscribe to a newsgroup for the first time, you receive all
the messages whether or not you select the New messages only check box.
To unsubscribe
In the Outlook Express folder pane, right-click the newsgroup that you want
to stop using, and then click Unsubscribe on the shortcut menu.
Tips
To reduce the number of items in the list of available newsgroups, enter a
phrase in the Display newsgroups which contain box. For instance, you can
enter an application name such as "publisher" or the name of a discipline
such as "programming." The list changes automatically when you finish
typing.
Newsgroups in languages other than English are identified by their names;
for example, microsoft.public.fr.excel is a newsgroup for Microsoft Excel
users who speak French.

Please post any further questions or followup to the newsgroups for the
benefit of others who may be interested. Unsolicited questions forwarded
directly to me will only be answered on a paid consulting basis.

Hope this helps

John McGhie [MVP - Word]

Hi Christine:

How do you know it is "brand new"? :) If you had a previous version of
Word installed when you installed Word 2003, it's not :) It's the old
template still hanging around.

1) Stop Word

2) Find Normal.dot

3) Rename it Old Normal.dot

4) Restart Word

5) Use Format>Styles and Formatting to select the Normal style and choose
Modify

6) Choose Paragraph Formatting, then set the Tabs the way you want them.

7) OK your way out and close Word.

8) If prompted to Save the Normal Template, say YES.

NOW you know you have a brand new Normal template, and the Jason Tab should
be gone forever.

Some hints for the unwary:

* Find your Normal Template by using the Search mechanism in My Computer.
There may be several Normal Templates on a computer that has been in use for
a while: make sure you rename all of them.

* Word must be quit, not just minimised, when you do this, else it won't
allow you to change the name of the template because it has it open.

* The Normal Template is a "Non-File Template" in Word 2002/2003. That
means that the template itself is hard-coded into Word and will not be
created as a file unless you change it. That's why you must do Steps 5 and
6 before trying to save the template: if you do not, it will not be created.

Hope this helps
