i beam and cursor separate and text is inserted at i beam

tearing my hair out

When I type text the i beam and the cursor separate and the text is inserted
where the i beam is. This is generally back in the previously typed text. Can
anyone help me this is so irritating I am using Word 2003 from microsoft
office pro 2003 Thanks

There is a mouse pointer, and there is an insertion point. The former is
indicated [usually] by an arrow or other pointer. The latter is indicated by
a vertical bar.

One thing you might try is Tools - Options - Edit tab, "Use smart
cursoring". If it's off--turn it on. If it's on--turn it off. Then see if
the change improves matters for you. I have it turned on, and find that Word
is a bit more intuitive, from my point of view.

Another setting to look at is "Enable click and type" (also in the Options -
Edit tab). I don't particularly like this setting, since it can result in
the insertion of paragraph marks and tabs to effect the placement of the
insertion point wherever you click, but some folks like it.
