i cannot activate spellcheck in office word 97 running on xp

i use word from office pro 97 on my pc which runs using xp. i cannot
spellcheck and when i go to tools/options/spelling & grammer the spelling
section is greyed out. i also cannot spellcheck new messages in my outlook
express. any ideas please.
