Using Access 2000, 2003; with a linked Excell spreadsheet, and a wizard
created form, the form (or dtasheet og table) I cannot change data in the xls.

Works fine in access office 97.

Am I missing something? Should I be able to do this if not its not much good
is it?

I have looked everywhere, tried every setting in properties of form
contol(s) the only effect is if I set "data entry" the form controls
dissapear - great!

Unfortunately, the ability was removed from Access due to Microsoft losing a
lawsuit.

You can always import the data into Access, make your changes, then export
it back out to Excel, or you can try using Automation to update the Excel
spreadsheet directly.

Cheers Douglas,

I really wasn't expecting such a prompt response - thanks! - or the result -
why wasn't it made clear - I have spent HOURS assuming it was my stupidity!

OK let's be positive - what do you mean by "using Automation" to update the
spreadsheet? Is this something in Excel?

The whole point was to use Access's pretty good forms facilities to enter,
monitor and upddate.

Anyway thanks for stopping me using up even more time.
