I cannot change the font in Excel no matter what I do

Hi There,
I know this seems completely basic, but I cannot change the font from Arial
in Excel. I have tried using every toolbar and menu known to man, but
nothing works. What is weird though, is that I can select a cell, for
example, and choose a different font (Times New Roman) and Excel tells me the
font has been changed, but appearance-wise it is still Arial. And, just for
the sake of life and the world in general, how about a campaign against
sans-serif fonts?
Thanks

Why ?
These days most common formats are serif

Hi Steve,
Actually, the default font of Excel, one very common application, is Arial,
which is sans-serif. Studies have been done to show that serif fonts are
easier to read. Additionally, when a person (right now, myself) would like
to use both capitals and lower case in their spreadsheets, the sheets become
illegible wheh I have the letter L or the letter I where the I is capitalized
and the L is lower case.
