i cannot customize my word 2003 toolbars

Kerry

Hi

I created a template using Word XP with macros, toolbars and menus changes,
I have now upgraded to Word 2003. The macros are sitting in the template but
the customised menus and toolbars do not show. I am unable to recreate them
as Word 2003 will not let me custmoise toolbars or menus. Even using a new
template or trying to modify normal I am still unable to add or remove
buttons. Only create band new toolbars.

Its driving me potty!! I would really appreciate some advice. I have the
latest updates installed, I have uninstalled Adobe too.

Many thanks

Kerry

What happens when you try to edit a Toolbar? Are you using Adobe Acrobat 7?

Hi

No, I have removed Adobe acrobat completely from my machine after reading
another thread about the possibility of conflicts. When I try to edit a
toolbar the dialog box shows quite hapily but when dragging new buttons on I
am shown the cross on my mouse and it will not allow me to remove buttons
either. I can create a new toolbar and add and remove buttons from that
though. Its very strange.

Thanks for your time

Are you saving the new Toolbar in the normal.dot template or a different
template?

Knowing Adobe, the uninstaller probably didn't remove all the add-ins, so
try the following solution.

Edit the Windows registry by finding the key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\PDFMaker.OfficeAddin]

and change the subkey called "LoadBehavior" from a value of 3 to 0

It doesn't sound as if Acrobat is the issue here, since it would allow you
to modify the toolbars; it would just prevent Word from saving the
modifications.

I wonder if there is some other add-in (perhaps at a corporate level) that
is protecting the built-in toolbars.

Just for clarification regarding the custom Toolbars that you saved to your
own template; is the template in the Word Startup folder and under Tools,
Options, File Locations, is the Startup location pointing to the same place
as the custom template?

(Afterthought.) One more: under Tools, Templates and Add-ins, can you see
your custom template listed and is it ticked?
